Reading about the events that unfolded just after Katrina makes my blood BOIL! Check out the links below for the articles about post-Katrina violence by white vigilantes. This is much more than a case of crazed individuals shooting African American hurricane victims indiscriminately. In both cases, the state is implicated in the outright murder of Black New Orleans residents... in the first the police encouraged white vigilantes in the second they committed the brutal acts. And when the State isn't directly implicated, it's important to remember that they left people to drown and die in the first place... Will we ever talk about New Orleans on the National Stage again? I am still so angry... they let us die to preserve the ideology of state irresponsibility and in way too many cases, they killed us outright! And who gives a fuck if people were stealing shoes... This notion that 'looters' were less valuable lives is absurd. As my New Orleans mother, Ma Evette told me, there were 70 year old white women stealing food and tv's just after the storm... this problematic conversation would be a lot different had old white women been shot indiscriminately in the street for 'looting.'...
